A newly-discovered bug is causing iPhones to crash when users type in a particular string of characters. The bug, highlighted by a security researcher on Mastodon, can be triggered by typing “”:: in Spotlight search and the App Library and Settings search bar. Typing these characters in Spotlight search or App Library search crashes the user interface and causes the phone to show the lock screen. In some cases, triggering the bug shows a black screen for a moment.
As it turns out, some users noted that all you need to do is type “”: followed by any character to trigger the bug. This means you trigger if you type text strings like “A”:B or “Anything at all”: x.
While Apple is yet to comment on the matter, it does not seem to be a security issue since no there is no evidence that anyone else other than the device owner can trigger it. For those wondering, the bug is not that annoying unless you are typing the string mentioned above and can be safely replicated on most iPhones. However, according to CNET, who tested it on both iOS 17 and iOS 18 beta, the bug isn’t consistent on the latter.
Also, on iPadOS 17.6.1, which happens to be the latest stable release, the bug did not crash the software on the home screen but it did crash Springboard from the App Library and Settings search bar.
